What Android zero-touch enrollment does

Android zero-touch enrollment is Google's method for provisioning company-owned Android devices automatically. An authorized reseller registers eligible devices through the zero-touch portal at the point of purchase. When a device is first switched on and connects to the internet, it launches the compatible management flow, applies the approved configuration and enforces the required policies.

Axon brings the same deployment discipline used for national identity and SIM registration programmes to Android device rollouts. We connect the eligible device, your organisation and your compatible EMM before dispatch, then deliver across South Africa and fourteen other verified markets.

How it works

Five steps from order to a working, managed device in the field.

01

You order devices from Axon

Tell us the models, quantities and destinations.

02

We register them in the portal

Every required device identifier is registered through the zero-touch portal before dispatch.

03

You configure once

Map your devices to your EMM configuration — apps, Wi-Fi, security policy, restrictions. Set a default and every future device inherits it.

04

We ship direct

To your sites, your branches, your field agents' addresses. No central staging.

05

The user powers on

The device provisions itself and is working within minutes.

What the user sees at first boot

The employee does not need a staging guide or a technician beside them. Once the new device connects to the internet, Android identifies the organisation, launches the approved management flow and applies the policy defined in the compatible EMM.

Why it matters

Zero-touch changes who does the work, and when the security posture starts.

For IT

No imaging, no manual builds, no configuration drift between devices. Replacements ship straight to the user. An assigned device checks the portal again after a factory reset.

For the business

Faster time to productivity, materially lower deployment cost per device, and security applied from first boot rather than whenever someone gets around to it. Devices stay under your control for their whole life, including after resale-grade wipes.

For distributed operations

This is the difference between flying a technician to a regional office and couriering a box.

Who we build this for

Axon's programmes deploy biometric enrollment and registration devices across national identity, elections, census, SIM registration and financial-services rollouts — often thousands of devices to remote or low-connectivity sites in a single campaign. Android zero-touch enrollment removes the manual provisioning bottleneck where compatible devices and management platforms are used: devices ship pre-registered, field teams unbox and go, and IT retains policy control without visiting every site.

Compatibility checked before you order

Broad zero-touch support starts with Android 9.0, with selected Android 8.0 devices also compatible and Google Pixel supported from Android 7.0. Eligible devices must include Google Mobile Services and your EMM must provide a supported device policy controller.

Model eligibility and identifier requirements can vary, especially for tablets and rugged hardware. Axon validates the exact model and intended enrollment route before supply.

Choose the correct deployment route

Android zero-touch enrollment and Axon SolarMDM

SolarMDM is Axon's project-based device-management platform for controlled deployments such as elections, census operations and large-scale enrollment programmes. It is separate from the Android zero-touch enrollment reseller service.

Where a programme uses a zero-touch-compatible EMM, Axon's reseller service handles automatic out-of-box provisioning. Where a programme runs on SolarMDM, devices are enrolled and locked down through Axon's own project onboarding process. Our team will recommend the right path for the programme.

What is Android zero-touch enrollment?
It is Google's automated provisioning method for company-owned Android devices. Devices registered by an authorized reseller enroll into a compatible management platform and enforce the approved policies automatically on first boot, with no manual staging.
Can I add devices I already own?
Registration normally happens through the zero-touch reseller that supplied the device. If an existing device was purchased through an authorized zero-touch reseller, ask that reseller whether it can be registered. For other existing fleets, QR code enrollment, NFC enrollment or Samsung Knox Mobile Enrollment may be the practical route.
What are the requirements?
Most eligible devices run Android 9.0 or later, with selected Android 8.0 devices also supported and Google Pixel supported from Android 7.0. Devices need Google Mobile Services, a compatible EMM, purchase through an authorized zero-touch reseller, and internet access at first boot.
Is Axon an authorized reseller?
Yes. Axon is listed in Google's Android Enterprise Solutions Directory as a validated reseller and holds Android Enterprise Silver Partner status.
How is this different from QR code enrollment?
QR enrollment works on a compatible device regardless of where it was bought, but someone has to physically scan each device. Zero-touch requires the reseller relationship but removes that per-device staging step. QR suits smaller or mixed-source fleets; zero-touch suits volume and distributed delivery.
Zero-touch or Samsung Knox Mobile Enrollment?
Zero-touch is Google's cross-manufacturer method; KME is Samsung-only. If the same Samsung device has both configurations, KME takes precedence. Use one route per device: standardize on zero-touch for a mixed Android fleet, or use KME where a Samsung-specific deployment is the better fit.
Does it work with my MDM?
It works with a compatible EMM that supports Android zero-touch enrollment and provides a supported Device Policy Controller. SolarMDM is a separate, project-based Axon platform with its own onboarding process; our team will recommend the correct route for your deployment.
What happens after a factory reset?
If the device is still assigned in the zero-touch portal, it checks the assignment and enrolls again during setup. Deregister the device through the reseller before resale or permanent transfer.
Does zero-touch support work profiles?
Zero-touch is for company-owned devices — fully managed, corporate work profile, or dedicated/kiosk mode. Company-owned Android 10+ devices can be provisioned either fully managed or with a work profile. Personal BYOD devices use a work profile enrolled separately.
Can devices be removed from zero-touch later?
Yes, but deregistration goes through the reseller. If you sell or repurpose devices, we unclaim them so the next owner is not locked out.
What does it cost?
The zero-touch portal does not have a Google license charge. Your costs are the devices, compatible EMM licensing and any deployment services. Android zero-touch enrollment may be subject to reseller fees in certain countries.
How do we start?
Send us your device requirement and tell us which compatible EMM you use. We will confirm model eligibility, establish the zero-touch portal relationship with your first order and guide your IT team through the configuration.
