## What It Is

Android zero-touch enrollment is Google's method for automatically provisioning company-owned Android devices. An authorized reseller registers eligible devices through the zero-touch portal. Axon connects the device, the customer organisation and its chosen compatible enterprise mobility management (EMM) configuration before dispatch.

## How It Works

1. The customer orders devices from Axon (models, quantities, destinations).
2. Axon registers every required device identifier through the zero-touch portal before dispatch.
3. The customer configures their EMM policy once — apps, Wi-Fi, security, restrictions — as the default every future device inherits.
4. Axon ships devices direct to sites, branches or field agents — no central staging.
5. The user powers the device on; it provisions itself and is working within minutes.

## What Happens at First Boot

1. The new or factory-reset device connects to the internet.
2. Android checks the device identifiers and recognises the customer's zero-touch assignment.
3. The device launches the customer's approved EMM enrollment flow.
4. Security policy, Wi-Fi settings, certificates, restrictions and work applications are applied as defined by the EMM configuration.
5. The user reaches a managed device that is ready for its intended work.

The exact screens and sequence vary by EMM and Android version.

## Why It Matters

- **IT teams**: no imaging or manual builds, no configuration drift, replacements ship straight to the user, and an assigned device checks the portal again after a factory reset.
- **The business**: faster time to productivity, lower deployment cost per device, security applied from first boot.
- **Distributed operations**: removes the need to fly a technician to a regional office — a box is couriered instead.

## Device Compatibility

Broad support starts with Android 9.0. Selected devices running Android 8.0 are also compatible, and Google Pixel is supported from Android 7.0. Eligible devices must include Google Mobile Services, and the customer's EMM must provide a supported device policy controller. Model eligibility and identifier requirements can vary. Axon verifies the exact model, IMEI/serial identifier set, EMM support and country/reseller registration before supply.

## Supported Device Types

- **Smartphones:** fully managed or company-owned work-profile deployments for knowledge workers, sales teams and field staff.
- **Tablets:** managed tablets for inspections, healthcare, mobile operations and shared work.
- **Rugged handhelds:** scanners and enterprise handhelds used in logistics, utilities, mining and field service.
- **Dedicated, kiosk and POS devices:** fixed-purpose Android hardware configured for a restricted application set or kiosk experience.

Compatibility is confirmed at exact model level; the category alone does not guarantee zero-touch eligibility.

## Choosing an Android Enrollment Route

| Route | Best fit | Physical handling | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android zero-touch | New, distributed Android fleets | No per-device staging after reseller registration | Supported devices across Android manufacturers |
| QR enrollment | Existing, smaller or mixed-source fleets | A QR code is scanned on every device after reset | Broad compatible Android fleet |
| NFC enrollment | Technician-led staging | A compatible device is tapped during setup | NFC-capable Android devices |
| Samsung Knox Mobile Enrollment (KME) | Samsung-only estates | No per-device staging after reseller assignment | Supported Samsung Galaxy devices |

If a Samsung device is configured in both zero-touch and KME, KME takes precedence. Use one enrollment route per device.

## Relationship to SolarMDM

Android zero-touch enrollment is a reseller provisioning service, not a SolarMDM feature. SolarMDM is Axon's separate, project-based device-management platform for controlled deployments such as elections, census operations and large-scale enrollment programmes. Where a programme uses a zero-touch-compatible EMM, Axon's reseller service handles out-of-box provisioning. Where a programme runs on SolarMDM, devices are enrolled and locked down through Axon's own project onboarding process.

## Required Notices

Android zero-touch enrollment may be subject to reseller fees in certain countries.
